Independent advice guaranteed.

An amendment to the Health and Social Care Bill has been tabled by Nadine Dorries MP and Frank Field MP that would ensure that women considering abortion have access to independent information and advice from someone who had no vested financial interest in the outcome of their decision.

It is expected that the amendment will be discussed during the debate on the Health and Social Care Bill on Tuesday 6th September.

Although the government has now accepted the need for independent counselling to be made available to all women considering abortion, it is vital that as many MPs as possible speak in support of these improvements during the debate.

These changes need the support of as many MPs as possible on Tuesday 6th September.

You can find out more about the amendment below but if you support this move, please contact your MP as soon as possible. Click here for more information.

What is the amendment?

The Health and Social Care Bill seeks to restructure the way that health services and care are provided by the NHS. It is expected that the Bill will be debated on the first full day of business following the summer recess (Tuesday 6th September).

This amendment does two things. First, it requires GPs to ensure that woman considering abortion have access to proper advice, information and counselling. Secondly, it guarantees that those providing help don’t have a vested financial interest in providing abortion.

Will this force women who want an abortion to jump through more hoops?

No. The amendment does not make counselling compulsory. Instead it means that the NHS must make sure that women know about and have access to this support if they want it.

Why shouldn’t abortion providers offer this counselling?

Although private abortion providers are registered charities, they still have a vested interest in seeing women proceed with an abortion. They charge the NHS for most of the abortions that they carry out and the UK’s biggest providers of this service rely heavily on this income. They have a financial conflict of interest and are not in a position to provide independent information and advice.

What can I do?

Please contact your MP as soon as possible and urge them to sign the amendment and vote for it. You can find out how to do that and read suggestions about what to say here.
